How to apply for a US passport in person
First-time applicants and some renewals must apply in person with Form DS-11. Others can renew by mail with Form DS-82. Check which applies before you book.
- Use DS-11 in person if it's your first passport, you're under 16, or your last one was issued over 15 years ago, before 16, or was lost, stolen or damaged.
- Find a passport acceptance facility, such as a post office or county office, and book an appointment if it requires one.
- Gather your citizenship evidence and photo ID, plus a photocopy of each on plain 8.5 x 11 paper, single-sided.
- Get one 2 x 2 inch passport photo. Don't attach it to the form; the agent will.
- Fill in DS-11 but don't sign it until the agent asks. Bring two payments: one for the State Department, one for the facility.
- Check current fees and processing times on travel.state.gov, then track your status online after you apply.
Questions people ask
Does Fo apply for the passport for me?
No. A DS-11 application must be made by you in person. Fo books the appointment, sorts out the photo and checklist, and tracks the application once it's in.
Can Fo get me an earlier appointment?
Fo checks several facilities and keeps watching for openings, so you see slots as they appear. It can't promise one exists sooner; that depends on the facilities near you.
Will Fo pay fees without asking?
No. Passport fees are paid at your appointment or with your mailed form. If Fo books a paid photo, it tells you the price and books only after you approve it.
